Maserati GranTurismo: An Automatic Choice
The Maserati GranTurismo is the Tridents best expression of its passion for engines, technological innovation and, obviously, unparalleled looks. It also represents the latest in Maserati’s long line of coupes which have refined and redefined the Grand Touring concept since 1946. Pininfarina was able to create a design that symbolizes the very nature of the GranTurismo concept, combining sporty performance in a roomy car for four adults. The lineup was expanded in 2009 with the introduction of the more powerful GranTurismo S, as well as a new ZF six-speed automatic in replacement of Maseratis previous semi-manual transmission.
The standard Maserati GranTurismo comes with a 405-horsepower 4.2-liter V-8, while the sportier GranTurismo S gets a 4.7-liter engine with 433 horsepower. Both engines are a variation of an original Ferrari design and the sound of the exhaust is a harmonious soundtrack.
The exhaust is developed to emphasize the deep sound of the new V8, while optimizing the levels of on-board comfort expected from a grand tourer. The biggest innovation on the sequential robotic gearbox fitted in the Maserati GranTurismo S is the gearbox MC-Shift program, which comprises management software with hardware components, allowing super fast gear change times.
Some of the on-board technology of the standard GranTurismo derives from the world of competition, such as the vehicles stainless steel exhaust system featuring mechanical catalysers, which are designed to meet the most stringent anti-pollution regulations without compromising performance.
The six-speed ZF automatic transmission is standard in the GranTurismo range. It has proven to be an excellent replacement for the old Duo-Select automated manual gearbox immediately after its introduction in 2009. The ZF automatic shifts quickly and decisively, reacting more promptly to throttle inputs and steep grades than most automatics.
The 2010 Maserati GranTurismo manages to handle in a very nimble fashion in tight corners. The Skyhook-derived suspension provides a comfortable, but firm ride which can be tightened even further with use of the Sport button. The throttle is instantly responsive, without being edgy. Stopping power from the brakes is excellent. The GranTurismos cabin feels intimate, due to quality materials and soft, minimally processed leather. All GranTurismos are highly customizable: owners can pick from eight different upholstery colors, three different wood veneers, ten different dash surfaces, and a tremendous number of combinations for steering-wheel trim, carpets, and seat stitching.
