Accommodation For Visitors in Dundee
Being one of the prime tourist locations in Scotland, the city of Dundee has a plentiful and varied supply of accommodation opportunities for visitors to the city. The city has plenty of top quality and mid-range hotels, bed & breakfast/guest houses as well as caravan and camping parks; all of which can cater for touring visitors or those wishing to spend their holiday in Dundee itself. The nearby beaches to the east of Dundee, heading up the North Sea coast to Arbroath, have for many years been popular as a family holiday destination for Scottish families; not to mention the popularity of the world famous Carnoustie golf links.
The top hotel in the city at the moment is undoubtedly the Dundee Apex City Quay Hotel and Spa, a truly 4 star hotel in the city centre of Dundee. Located in the City Quay complex in the old Victoria Docks, the 152 bedrooms are furnished and equipped to the best of contemporary styles. Combined with bar, restaurant, gym and spa facilities the Apex City provides the opportunity to indulge yourself in a bit of luxury during your stay in Dundee. There are five categories of room that you can book into from a ‘Standard Twin’ to ‘Superior King Suite’. Depending on the type of room you want a double room on a week-end evening can cost anything from £90 to £180, including breakfast. There is also a 4 star Hilton Hotel in Dundee, at Earl Grey Place, which has views over the river Tay and the Tay Bridge. Here you can get a room on a week-end evening for £120.
For something outside of the main city centre you could consider the 3 star Swallow Hotel, on the Kingsway West in Dundee. You can get a room there for a week-end evening for £70, but you need to shop around for the best offers. Otherwise a more typical price, including breakfast, is around £90 for a double room. Whilst more expensive than the Bed & Breakfast establishments you do get a garden to relax in and full restaurant facilities at this hotel. Another 3 star hotel in Dundee is the Invercase, which is one of the Best Western chain of hotels. The Dundee Invercase Hotel is off the Perth Road to the west of the city centre. Double rooms are available from £90 per night.
Apart for the usual national chains of 2 star hotels, Dundee has some fine small independent ones too. The Abalree, on Union Street, being one such example. This small guest house is only a couple of minutes walk from the railway station and will have a warm and friendly reception waiting for you. Bathrooms are all shared, but the bedrooms are all at least comfortable, clean and all have their own TV. Room prices per night are between £15 and £30. Not far away at number 94 Nethergait is the Aauld Steeple Guest House. Prices here are also excellent for a city centre location at £21 to £36 per room. However, Nethergait can be quite ‘lively’ during the evenings, so if you’re not a reveler yourself you might want to consider staying elsewhere. Just around the corner on Marketgait is the Travel Lodge Dundee Central. During a week-end stay you can have an en suite double room for £51 a night and be confident of a good nights sleep. For anyone looking to stay in or near Dundee and take advantage of the local beaches, then finding somewhere to stay in nearby Broughty Ferry, to the east of the city, makes good sense. Here you’ll find the prices are cheaper, being outside of Dundee city centre, yet you’ll have the convenience of being close to both the beaches and the city. Go to Monifeth Road, in Broughty Ferry, and you’ll find a good selection of Bed & Breakfast places to choose from.
The Dundee area also has plenty of self-catering apartments to choose from if you’re planning an extended stay in the city. Top of the range in self-catering accommodation around Dundee is the Piperdam leisure resort at Fowlis, about 5km (3 miles) out of the city. There are four categories of accommodation you can choose from ranging from as little as £250 a week to over £1700, depending on the type of accommodation and the period during which you wish to book it. Literally across the river, over the Tay Bridge, is Thorndene – at Newport-On-Tay. Minutes away from Dundee city centre over the bridge this self-catering accommodation offers great value, even though it’ll cost you a little under £1 daily to use the toll bridge. Set in Balmore, a country mansion built by a former Jute Mill owner, the accommodation costs between £250 and £450 a week, depending on the period booked.
During the peak periods you can pitch a tent or park a caravan at the Foresterseat Caravan Park, at Burnside, for £75 and £95 respectively. Although this site is a little under 20km (15 miles) from the city centre it offers a great location for a variety of tourist opportunities. With fantastic coastal and mountain scenery nearby, world class golf courses and the city itself; by staying here you really could make the most of your time near to Dundee.
